A selection of photographs of different people, ages and genders on yellow background

Be seen. Be counted. Be part of something bigger. Send in your photo and join #PicsForThe1in6

We are looking for pictures of people affected by neurological conditions and those who support their care – friends and family members – to be part of a powerful collage celebrating the neuro community.

Send in your photo

Please send in your photo if you are based in the UK and:

  • Have a neurological condition and/or
  • Are a friend or family member of someone with a neurological condition

Photos of children and young people under 18 are welcome as long as their parent or guardian has given their consent for the image to be used as part of the portrait.

How to send in your photo

You can:

  • Email your photo to info@neural.org.uk with the subject line Pics For The 1 in 6
  • Send your photo to our WhatsApp number at 07596 864415.
  • Send in your photo using Twitter. Tweet us @NeuroAlliance and include the hashtag #PicsForThe1in6
  • Send us a message on Facebook or Instagram including your photo.

Not online?

Please call 01923 882 590 if you or someone you know would like to send in their photo but doesn’t have access to the online options.

What kind of photo?

Waist up or full-length

To make sure the images in the final portrait are as clear as possible, we’re asking for waist up photos of individual people.

However, please send in a full length photo if:

  • you feel a full length photo is important to represent your experience of your neurological condition and your life
  • to help you show an aspect of your condition, or
  • if this would help you to include a mobility aid you feel is important to show in your photo.

1 or 2 people

To make sure each image is as clear as possible and to highlight individuals affected by neurological conditions, we are asking for pictures of individual people wherever possible.

However, if you would like a second person in the photo, please take your photo together and send it in.

We want #PicsForThe1in6 to be accessible to as many people as possible, and as inclusive as possible.

Tips for digital photo quality

Please make sure you upload a high resolution image/s (1000px x 1000px minimum) with a file size no bigger than 10 MB. Most mobile phones will take this kind of image.

  • Please make sure your photo is well lit – avoid putting your back to the light.
  • Avoid patterned backgrounds.
  • If you are prompted to “reduce file size” when you upload or email your photo, please select “keep original size”.
  • Avoid cropping photos – this will be done for you.
In the image on the left light is coming from behind the person, putting their face in shadow. In the picture on the right, there is not enough light, making the picture look blurred. In the picture in the middle, light is coming from in front of the person, making the picture clearer.

Deadline

Send in your image(s) by midnight on 15 May 2023.

Consent

The person submitting the photograph must be aged 18 or over. You must have the consent of any people featured, or the consent of their parent or guardian if they are under 18.

By submitting your photo, you agree that these terms and conditions have been met.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is a moasic portrait?

A mosaic portrait is a large picture made up of lots of smaller pictures. See an example of a mosaic portrait in the first image in this news article here.

Neurological conditions can affect anyone at any age. But every person, and their experience of their neurological condition, is unique. Help us reflect and celebrate the diverse community of people affected by neurological conditions.

Is my neurological condition included? Can I send in my photo?

Yes. We want as many people as possible affected by neurological conditions to take part in #PicsForThe1in6 as possible to show the wide reaching impact of neurological conditions.

A neurological condition is any condition that affects the brain, spinal cord and/or nerves. There are over 600 neurological conditions. Some examples of neurological conditions include autism, Down’s Syndrome, epilepsy, dementia, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis (MS) and some types of cancer.

If you have a neurological condition, or a suspected neurological condition, or you are a friend or family member of someone with a neurological condition or suspected neurological condition, we encourage you to take part in #PicsForThe1in6 and send in your photo.

You do not have to provide proof of your neurological condition to take part.

Find out more about different types of neurological condition here.

How could my photo be used?

This unique collage will be displayed at the Houses of Parliament and used to support the hand-in of our petition calling on all UK governments to work together to create a UK-wide Neuro Taskforce to improve services for people affected by neurological conditions. The finished portrait will also be available to view online and on social media.

By submitting your photograph, you give us permission to use that photograph as part of the #BackThe1in6 community portrait to support the hand-in of our petition calling on UK governments to create a Neuro Taskforce. The portrait will be displayed at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, online and through social media, including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The portrait may also be displayed at other seats of government throughout the UK, such as the Welsh Parliament (Senedd) The Scottish Parliament or the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Will my photo definitely be used?

We aim to use as many photographs as possible, but there is no guarantee every photograph will be used. Inappropriate images and those that show people’s faces from a large public gathering will not be considered and will be deleted.

Will my photo be altered?

The images will only be altered slightly. They will be cropped to be square rather than rectangular. Image contrast and brightness will only be altered if it is deemed necessary. This will only be used to enhance the clarity of the image and make the person in the photo appear more visible.

I’ve changed my mind. How can I withdraw my photo?

If you send in an image and later wish to change your mind and withdraw your consent for the image to be used, you must notify The Neurological Alliance in writing by email to info@neural.org.uk no later than midnight on 12 May 2023. The image and any associated content will be destroyed, and we will confirm this to you before 22 May 2023. Tell us how you submitted your image and include your name and email address or phone number so that we can contact you.

Can I send in photos of babies, children or teenagers?

We welcome photos of babies, children and young people under 18. You must get consent from the parent or guardian before submitting the photo.

Only submit photos they would be happy to see online and in the public domain. Make sure the photo doesn’t include identifying information such as school logos or badges, street names or house numbers.

How many images can I send in?

There is no limit on how many images you can submit but you must have the full consent of any people featured, or their parent or guardian if they are under 18.
